NAMING YOUR NEWBORN CHILD

Naming your newborn is a very exciting event. A person’s name is an important part of shaping their identity. It can also be a daunting task for many parents, especially given the amount of possible names to choose from. Here’s a few tips that might help you with choosing a name for your child.

MEANING OF NAMES

People probably aren’t going to treat Liam and different in life because his name means “Strong-willed warrior and protector”. Likewise, Sarah probably isn’t going to be treated differently because her name means “Princess”, but people still like to name their children with the meaning of such names in mind. It’s also a good idea to check and see if the name you are thinking of using, has any meaning attached to it. Sometimes such meaning may not be perceived positively and you might like to avoid a particular name due to its meaning. Lola might night like it when she finds out that her name means “Lady of Sorrows”. Cameron might not be too pleased to learn that his name means “Crooked Nose”. Some people aren’t interested in the meaning of names, and it might be seen as a bit of a superstition but it’s just good to check and see how you feel about the meaning, if any, that’s attached to the name you are thinking of using. A simple way to check the meaning of your name is a quick google search. Simply search for “Meaning of the name James” and this will find the meaning for you. Change the name in the search phrase accordingly to search for different names.

NAMING CHILD AFTER FAMILY

Parents will often choose to name their babies after a family member, or even themselves. This can be an easy way to choose a name for your baby. A child’s father may be named James, and a family might choose to call their boy James, or possibly use that name as the child’s middle name. This is a very common naming practice in Australia. Some families might use the same middle name as a parent, or grandparent for their child.

NICKNAMES & INITIALS

Something to consider when naming your child is the possibility of nicknames based on shorthands and initial placings of some names. People can be cruel in life, especially children when it comes to things like nicknames for other people. Take the name “Peter Earl Easton” for example. The 3 initial of this name spell PEE. In an ideal world, this wouldn’t be a problem, but in reality, such a name probably opens itself up to some level of ridicule. It’s just a good tip to look at any possible nicknames that can be applied to the set of names you choose and make sure you are comfortable with the names you choose, and think of your child growing up with such names!

RESTRICTIONS ON BABY NAMES

In Australia, there are some rules and guidelines to naming your child, and some names are prohibited under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1996. Some of the reasons that names might not be allowed are:

  • Offensive or obscene names
  • Impractical names, such as names that are very long or contains non standard characters.
  • Misleading names.
